Last night, one of our local stables, Spruce Meadows, was transformed into something entirely ethereal, as the Calgary Water Lantern Festival set up shop at the venue’s waterfront park.
It was not just an event; it was a masterclass in slow, intentional living wrapped in absolute magic.
Despite the long line of traffic to get into the event, parking and check-in were fast and seamless.
All guests received logo’d drawstring bags at check-in. Inside were not only our lantern kit (four-sided collapsible paper lantern, wooden base and corner support sticks, a marker, a battery-operated tea light candle) but also decks of regular and ‘conversation cards’, which were meant to inspire thoughtful and meaningful conversations amongst the guests.
The last item in the box was a checklist for the event scavenger hunt, which encouraged guests to roam around the grounds and strike up conversations with fellow festival-goers.
The evening began with curated food truck bites and a beautifully relaxed lawn aesthetic strewn with picnic blankets and lawn chairs.
There were big lines for food and loads of people. We went to look at the food choices, but decided against it when we saw the size of the lineups.
Amongst the giggles and people snacking on food, there were tears as people remembered loved ones passed; there were bright eyes as people discussed their dreams and goals, and there were also teary-eyed warm and fuzzies about wonderful things to come.
There was something profoundly moving about watching hundreds of people quietly ink their heaviest griefs, highest hopes, loftiest dreams, and deepest loves onto simple paper lanterns.
The true shift happened as dusk settled. As our lantern lights switched on and lanterns began to glow, we all prepared to launch our creations of love onto the shimmery pond. Raw emotion electrified the night air.
As the lanterns were released, the view became absolutely breathtaking. Thousands of golden, flickering lights drifted onto the water, completely blurring the line between the pond and the night sky.
It felt less like a local gathering and more like stepping directly into a lucid dream, where time completely stood still. The soft glow reflecting off the ripples created a surreal landscape that was both visually stunning and deeply comforting.
As the water filled with thousands of floating, golden lights, the atmosphere became beautifully heavy with remembrance. It was a stunning, poignant reminder of how connected we all are in our healing. After all, we’re all just humans trying to live our best life.
It was a truly unforgettable summer night.

Points to improve: More food vendors would have reduced the really long lines for food trucks, and better organization is needed at launch time. LOud speakers were very hard to hear.
