We’re at Grey Eagle Event Centre for The Price Is Right Live!
Mudder would be some excited about this — and maybe a little jealous. She watched The Price Is Right faithfully and was a huge Bob Barker fan, so being there had me thinking about her right from the start.
Even before we made it into the room, we were amazed by the get-ups. Whole teams of people had dressed in matching outfits, and every group seemed more ridiculous than the last. There were bright colours, custom shirts and full-on costumes, including one group dressed entirely as Mrs. Roper.
You could tell right away that these people had come to play. Unfortunately, the names weren’t picked based on who looked the part in the crowd — they were randomly drawn by a computer from the people who had registered. So, all those fabulous outfits were strictly for bragging rights.
We weren’t really expecting to get a chance to spin the Big Wheel. With a packed room and only a handful of people getting called up, we figured our odds were about the same as everybody else’s. But you never know.
It was going to be a fun night either way.
The show had all the familiar Price Is Right ingredients, and we quickly learned how the names would be called. Names were posted on the big screens around the room, and then the announcer would call out the lucky person with those famous words:
‘Come on Down!’
With that explanation out of the way, the music kicked in, and the crowd went wild. The energy in the room went from zero to totally excited pretty darn quickly.
The first name appeared on the screen, and the person jumped up, absolutely thrilled. They made their way down to the stage and took their place, while the rest of us watched and wondered who might be next.
Then the second contestant’s name started scrolling across the screen.
And this is where things got a little weird.
Because I’m not even joking…

My name was on the screen.
Well… my first name, anyway. The last name was some other P-name, but for one glorious, terrifying second, I thought it was me.
I nearly had a heart attack right there in the event centre. It was the kind of moment where excitement and sheer panic collide. I wasn’t even playing yet and I was already having visions of tripping over my own feet, face-planting right in the middle of the aisle, or just getting up there and making a complete fool of myself.
So, yeah. Maybe I was a little relieved when it turned out to be another Bobbi.
Maybe.
Turns out, I was safe in my seat. But for a few seconds there, I really thought it was my moment to shine.
The Price Is Right Live! is pretty much exactly what you’d expect if you’ve ever watched the television show and wondered what it would be like to experience it from the audience.
Lucky contestants get called down to play familiar games like Plinko, Cliffhangers and The Big Wheel, with prizes ranging from electronics and appliances to vacations and bigger-ticket prizes.
The Showcase Showdown was a little different from what we’re used to seeing on TV. Instead of bringing back the winners from the three previous games to spin the Big Wheel, they drew completely different audience members to take their turn at the wheel.
So even if you hadn’t made it onto the stage for one of the pricing games, you still had another shot at that big wheel.
The Grey Eagle experience
Grey Eagle Event Centre worked well for the show, with reserved seating and good sightlines to the stage. The Calgary performance was one of two shows held that day, with the evening performance starting at 8 p.m.
The hosts kept things moving, and there was plenty of cheering, shouting and that slightly manic energy that comes with the possibility that someone sitting a few rows away could suddenly be told to COME ON DOWN!
Of course, there’s a bit of a catch…You’re not guaranteed to become a contestant. Only a small number of people in the audience get selected, so if your name doesn’t appear on those screens, you’re spending the evening watching other people play. And while that’s still fun, it’s worth knowing that going in.
For us, though, the biggest takeaway wasn’t whether we won anything. It was the experience of sitting there thinking, ‘There’s no way they’re going to call me,’ and then watching my own name start appearing on the screen.
Well… almost my name.
And that’s the thing about The Price Is Right Live!: you really could be sitting in your seat watching a show one minute and wondering whether you should have worn more sensible shoes the next.
We went in expecting a fun night of nostalgia, and that’s exactly what we got — with a little unexpected Bobbi-shaped panic thrown in for good measure.
And I’m pretty sure Mom would have loved every minute of it.
