If you think your neighbourhood goes all out for Halloween, a pair of side-by-side homes in southwest Calgary is about to completely shatter your expectations.
Say hello to the mind-blowing, community-crafted Harry Potter Halloween Display that turns an unassuming street in Oakridge into a fully immersive slice of the Wizarding World.
Every October, two passionate neighbours pool their creative magic together to build an elaborate masterpiece, transforming their two side-by-side properties into an immersive walk-through nod to the world of Harry Potter. What started as a pandemic passion project has evolved into a massive annual tradition complete with full-scale sets, interactive details, and costumed characters.
This isn’t just a few plastic skeletons and string lights; itâs an immersive walkthrough that feels remarkably realistic, reminiscent of a Warner Bros. Studio Tour in London.

The first thing we noticed when we pulled up was a giant replica of the ‘Whomping Willow, ‘ complete with the flying car trapped in its branches. The mind-boggling tree’s frame was constructed out of lumber and upward of 70 pool noodles, then covered in papier-mâchĂŠ.
That alone is enough to stop most people in their tracks, but it’s only the beginning. You will also encounter the Herbology greenhouse, chock-a-block full of greenhouse magic, including the screaming mandrakes with roots that look like crying human babies, a candlelit Great Hall, a cozy Gryffindor Common Room and a Potions classroom.
Dumbledoreâs Office is also represented and jam-packed with hyper-accurate, thrifted artifacts like the Sorting Hat, the Triwizard Cup, and the Sword of Gryffindor.
The sheer attention to detail is wild; there are magical creatures hiding in plain sight, from a massive Aragog with his army of spiders to Dementors, and a Quidditch area.
You’ll wander past incredibly detailed facades of Hogsmeade Village and custom-built storefrontsâincluding Honeydukes, Zonko’s, Ollivanders, The Three Broomsticks and the Owl Postâbefore stepping right into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
As if floating broomsticks, dozens of fake owls and a realistic giant spider werenât enough, on event nights, the families and volunteers dress up as Harry Potter characters to bring the scene to life for visitors.
Calgary Uncovered Tip: While this is a free, family-friendly event thatâs open to all Muggles, the families collect non-perishable food items and financial contributions directly for the Calgary Food Bank. Over the years, theyâve collected thousands of pounds of food for the community.
We couldnât believe the amount of detail that goes into this Halloween Display. If you’re planning to visit, pack your camera, bring a non-perishable food item for the Calgary Food Bank and, if you’re feeling particularly magical, throw on your own Harry Potter costume. Then prepare to be amazed as you leave your Muggle life behind.
