Why it’s worth the stop: There’s a reason the Peace Bridge shows up in so many Calgary photos — it knows how to work a camera. That big red ribbon of steel looks fantastic from almost every angle, whether you’re standing beside it, walking through it or catching it from across the Bow River.
But the Peace Bridge is more than just a pretty face. When it opened in 2012, it was a bit of a controversial addition to the city. Calgarians questioned the cost; they questioned the unusual design and whether another bridge across the Bow River was even needed.
Turns out, Calgarians really did need the Peace Bridge.
Today, thousands of people use it every day to walk, cycle, commute, meet up and enjoy the river. It connects downtown with Sunnyside and the Bow River pathways, and somewhere along the way, that once-controversial bridge became one of the most recognizable and adored pieces of Calgary’s skyline.
And for photographers? Well, it’s nothing but a show-off.
Calgary argued about the Peace Bridge. Then Calgary adopted it. And now it’s a YYC icon.
💡 Calgary Uncovered Tip: The Peace Bridge is multi-talented. The Peace Bridge is basically the Swiss Army knife of Calgary photo spots. Sunny summer day? Gorgeous. Fall colours? Yep. Snowy winter? Absolutely. After-dark city lights? Even better. It just doesn’t know how to have a bad photo day.
📸 How to get the shot: Start at the riverbank. Get the whole bridge in the frame, with the Bow River and surrounding neighbourhood adding some context. Move around a little — even a few steps can completely change the composition.
Capture that classic Peace Bridge tunnel effect. Walk onto the bridge and shoot down the centre. The repeating red arches create natural leading lines that pull your eye right through the photograph.
For a people shot, put your subject just off to one side and let the bridge do the heavy lifting behind them. And don’t forget to turn around and grab an Ussie! Some of the best shots come from looking back toward the bridge rather than simply photographing it straight on.
Head below the bridge, look up and let those crazy curves do their thing. You just might find your favourite shot where you least expected it.
Then come back after dark and do them all over again for a completely different set of pictures.
