As long-time fans of Heartland, my family and I have followed the Bartlett-Fleming clan through every triumph and heartbreak over the years. When the opportunity came up to attend the official world premiere screening of Season 20, Episode 1, we didn’t hesitate. Knowing how incredibly dedicated this fanbase is, we got our tickets immediately, fully aware that an event like this would sell out quickly.

Our journey to this premiere began back in August, when we were lucky enough to participate in Heartland Fans Day. For one unforgettable day, we got to step in front of the camera as background actors. After being bussed out to a ‘secret location’, which turned out to be the real-life Heartland ranch, we spent the day being filmed as part of the crowd in rodeo scenes. Having that experience fresh in our minds made arriving at the premiere feel like the ultimate full-circle moment.

The excitement increased even more just before we left the house.  We received an email with our last-minute parking and arrival instructions, and that we should also expect a ’special announcement’ at 7:00 PM that evening. While we were bursting with speculation and anticipation, a small part of us was worried that the announcement would reveal that Season 20 would be the show’s final year. That would truly be the end of an era.

Bundled up against the chill, we headed out early to secure both a prime parking spot and great seats. The evening’s setting couldn’t have been more perfect: downtown High River, right in the heart of where the show is filmed. The screening itself was set up right next to Maggie’s Diner. Many times before, we had visited this fictional landmark just to peek through the windows, as the set is normally closed to the public.

To our absolute delight, a full indoor tour of Maggie’s was included in the day’s activities. Stepping through those doors felt like stepping straight through a portal into the world of Heartland.

We managed to find parking directly across from Colossi’s Coffee Shop, Maggie’s real-world neighbour. With time to spare, we grabbed a hot coffee and enjoyed a chat with some of the High River locals.

It wasn’t long before the atmosphere started to change. High River locals don’t typically sport full western wear unless it’s Calgary Stampede season, so the sudden influx of cowboy hats was our cue that fellow fans were starting to arrive. Following the event’s western dress code, a sea of western boots began moving toward the gates.

We walked around the corner to find a line of about 30 to 40 eager fans already waiting for the gates to open. The energy in the air was electric, with fans swapping stories, sharing theories about the night’s announcement, and bonding over a shared love of a show that has meant so much to us for two decades.

As we stood in line, we noticed that camera crews were absolutely everywhere, capturing photos and videos of the crowd. Some fans were even asked to deliver quick lines for the camera, like “We love Heartland!” or “Happy Heartland Day!” We happily played along, adding our own enthusiasm to the excitement as we watched crew members bustling around inside the cordoned-off area.

When the gates finally opened and our tickets were scanned, stepping onto the actual set was a lot to take in.

Knowing that seating was limited and some attendees might have to stand, we resisted the temptation to explore and headed straight for the seating area to secure our spots. The organizers had thoughtfully arranged for Wales Theatre to act as an overflow seating area, broadcasting the program and evening entertainment for those who preferred not to stand…but nobody wanted to leave. We all wanted to be right there where the excitement was.

Walking toward the seating area, we got our first look at the massive broadcast screen and the stage set up in front of it. At the very front of the stage stood the iconic gate post and the familiar Heartland ranch sign. With bright lights, television cameras, and drones buzzing overhead, it was clear that whatever announcement was coming was going to be epic.

Front-row seats were strictly reserved for the cast and special guests. We managed to secure excellent seats about 10 rows back, draped our jackets across them to mark them as taken, and eagerly set off to explore.

Maggie’s Diner was at the top of our list. Unlike our previous visits where we could only peek through the glass, the doors were wide open today. Walking inside felt incredibly surreal. Directly ahead was the counter lined with bright red upholstered stools where Tim and Jack have shared countless coffees.

Behind it sat the exact glass pot Lou used to pour coffee, alongside displays of pies and cookies that made it feel like a fully functioning diner. To the right were the chrome table and chair sets that have graced almost every episode, and the familiar jukebox sat in the corner, waiting for someone to drop a quarter.

It was the perfect setting to take some fan selfies.  I couldn’t resist capturing a special photograph to honour my past visits: years ago, I had pressed my face against the glass from the outside, shielding the light with my hands to get a glimpse inside. This time, I stood on the inside looking out—a quiet, deeply meaningful full-circle moment for a long-time fan.

After taking far too many pictures in the diner, we walked to the back of the building to explore the tack and feed section, which was fully stocked with everything from cowboy hats and ropes to cattle feed.

Outside, a roped-off display of some of the show’s most famous vehicles evoked an immediate wave of nostalgia. Seeing Jack’s newer-model old-style Chevy brought back vivid memories of the heartbreaking episode where Jack struggled to let go of his old truck, reminiscing about buying it with his late wife, Lyndy, and the agonizing grief of moving on. Ty’s truck reminded us of the day he first pulled into the ranch and his early days courting Amy. It instantly conjured up one of the show’s most romantic scenes, when the truck broke down, and the two shared a beautiful dance in the truck bed. And then there was Ty’s vintage motorcycle, which brought back the heartwarming bond between Ty and Jack as they bought the run-down bike together, singing Steppenwolf’s ‘Born to Be Wild’ all the way home.

Nearby, a dedicated Heartland Ranch area showcased the HL Ranch Collection, the show’s officially licensed apparel line. Hoodies, denim jackets, sweatshirts, graphic T-shirts, and canvas bags were displayed on mannequins and throughout the area, all emblazoned with the signature “HL” ranch brand logo. Fans took turns entering the display area to browse the collection and capture photos.

As dusk began to settle, we returned to our seats as other attendees started making their way back with food from the nearby food trucks. The choices were plentiful: hotdogs, hamburgers, French fries, full family-sized pizzas, and even bags of popcorn. There was no shortage of prime movie-night munchies.

Suddenly, a flurry of camera flashes and roaring cheers erupted from behind the giant screen. We hurried over to the red carpet area just as a fleet of black SUVs began pulling up. The crowd went wild as Amber Marshall, Shaun Johnston, and Michelle Morgan stepped out onto the carpet. We watched the cast line up for the media photoshoots, and the photographers even turned their lenses on us, asking the crowd to raise our phones as though we were capturing the stars for ourselves—while, in reality, we were also being filmed as part of the documentary.

We returned to our seats just as the formal program commenced. Before the festivities got started, a vibrant double rainbow appeared over the crowd, adding yet another element to the already magical fan celebration.

The evening’s host was a former cast member of the show: Greta Onieogou, who played Amy’s best friend and Maggie’s waitress, Soraya Duval (Seasons 1-5). After opening remarks from local dignitaries, Michael Weinberg, network executives and producers, and finally the stars of the show were invited onto the stage to much applause.

The microphone was then handed over to Amber Marshall, who began to reminisce about all the years spent working on Heartland, and the mystery behind the heavy camera presence was finally revealed. A 20-year retrospective documentary celebrating two decades of Heartland is officially in production—and the premiere crowd would be a part of it!

Amber then introduced the person leading the documentary crew, a past director and supervising editor of the show, none other than Graham Wardle. Wardle was beloved for his role as Ty Borden, Amy’s (now-deceased) husband, for 14 years. Wardle, who now resides in Australia, could not be there in person, but his surprise video on the giant screen thanked the over 1,000 dedicated ‘Heartlanders’ in attendance for their two decades of love and support.

Graham Wardle

Seeing Graham Wardle pop up on that massive outdoor screen brought a tear to many faces, but we didn’t have much time to process it. His role in the documentary included introducing a teaser for the project, and we were whisked away by Heartland magic once again.

The incredibly exciting trailer for the project gave us all a sneak peek of what to expect. The documentary promises an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the history of the series, its deep roots in High River and Alberta, and 20 seasons of memories shared by the cast and crew. It is scheduled to premiere on December 13, 2026, on CBC and CBC Gem, airing immediately following the broadcast conclusion of the new season’s episodes.

With the announcement easing everyone’s anxiety that this might be the final season, the stars took their front-row seats, and the crowd fell silent as Episode 2001, ‘Renewal,’ began.

Without giving away any spoilers, I can confidently say the season opener is fantastic. It delivers satisfying answers to long-standing questions while leaving fans with plenty of intriguing storylines to ponder as the season unfolds

Watching the premiere in downtown High River, with the autumn leaves swirling around us under a vast Alberta sky, was an unforgettable experience. Knowing that we were watching the episode alongside the cast and crew—sharing the exact moment they saw it completed for the very first time—felt like the kind of Heartland moment where you ride off into the sunset towards the Rocky Mountains on horseback at the end of a perfect scene.
