What a lovely evening!
We spent the evening at Beddington Theatre Arts Centre watching StoryBook Theatre’s production of Anne of Green Gables: The Musical, and our favourite little theatre did not disappoint.
Parking was a breeze, and the wait in the lobby was short and sweet.
There was a small glitch at the beginning of the show when it seemed like the sound system and microphones hadn’t quite been turned on yet. But honestly, it only added to the community feel of the evening.
The story was adorable, the music was wonderful and the voices were fantastic. The entire cast gave it their all, but the actors playing Anne (with an E), Marilla and Matthew really stood out for us. They were absolutely outstanding, bringing so much heart to these beloved characters.
There’s something pretty special about watching Anne’s story unfold in a small theatre like this. The intimate setting made Avonlea feel wonderfully close, and the cast brought plenty of energy, humour and warmth to the stage.
And, of course, there’s Anne herself. Imaginative, determined, occasionally a little dramatic and always completely herself. Whether accidentally dyeing her hair green or getting caught up in heated academic rivalries, she brings so much energy and optimism to the stage. Watching her find her place in Avonlea is every bit as charming as you’d hope.
But underneath all the fun and musical numbers is a beautiful, heartfelt story about friendship, resilience, family and finding where you belong. And for us, there was an extra little dose of East Coast spirit that made the whole thing feel right at home.
We were so happy to share the evening with friends, too. There’s something about sitting in a theatre together, laughing, getting a little misty-eyed and enjoying a good story that makes for a pretty wonderful evening
StoryBook Theatre has once again reminded us why we love this little theatre. And apparently, we weren’t the only ones enjoying Anne’s visit to Avonlea. The production was so popular that StoryBook Theatre added 10 more shows to the run.
Anne of Green Gables is warm, funny, charming and full of heart — a lovely way to spend an evening in Calgary.
And yes, Anne… with an E. ❤️
