When I saw the advertisement for Theresa Caputo, The Long Island Medium, at the Grey Eagle Event Centre, I knew right away I wanted to go.

Her show gave me a lot of comfort just after I lost my Momma. It was life-changing when I lost Mom; it ungrounded me, and I felt a little lost in the world. The girl who had always been able to lose herself in books and quality TV shows suddenly found herself with the attention span of a gnat. I couldn’t focus; I wasn’t interested in any of the things I was before. It was like a switch had been flipped to off.

When I stumbled across The Long Island Medium, I chuckled at the whole idea. Visions of planting ‘fakes’ in audiences, and having assistants research others so the star performer would have the details of loved ones recently departed.

But something in me paused and asked, ‘What if?’

Our upbringing and faith teach us of an afterlife; a place our loved ones go to wait for us. I got caught up with watching the show, even though intellectually the thought of it all was pshaw.

What if….

Time passed, grief healed, and eventually a new normal was found. As they say, life marches on.

Who knew that our new normal would be over 4000 kilometres away.

It was an easy park at the Grey Eagle; even though the lot was quite full, we had no trouble finding a spot. Even as we walked across the parking lot, I remember saying to hubby…

Grey Eagle

I’m not walking into this thing as a believer, you know. I’m not saying I’m NOT a believer either, but I’m more looking at this evening as any other ‘Show ’: an evening of entertainment. But wouldn’t it be supercool if she had a message for me?

As we were parked on the far end of the building away from the night’s event, we chose to walk through the Casino to access the events centre. We had never been in the building before and wanted to take a look around.

Inside, there is a small lobby with a sleek, modern counter-style desk, which serves as the casino guest services or security/reception desk for the gaming floor. Directly to the right of that is the game floor itself, and you can hear it before you see it: a bright, chaotic mix of electronic music, jingles, and beeps all competing for your attention.

As you move in through the doors, the first thing that catches your eye is a sea of towering, brightly lit slot machines, their screens flashing and electronic jingles overlapping in a constant casino chorus. Passing by the slot machines and table games, you continue toward the back or side corridors that lead toward the event wing.

One thing you notice pretty quickly is the smoke. Grey Eagle has a designated indoor smoking section, and the smell hangs in the air, particularly toward the back of the casino. Located on Tsuut’ina Nation land, the casino operates under a different regulatory framework than venues within Calgary proper, allowing indoor smoking in designated areas.

Once we were past the casino and through the corridor that connects them, we finally stepped into the event centre lobby, which is a gathering point before a show. As concertgoers arrive, mingle and make their way toward the concert hall, this is a transition between the casino’s busy gaming floor and the anticipation of live entertainment.

The doors opened at 6:30 PM ( for an 8 pm start), and it didn’t take long to find our assigned seat.

in our seats

Shortly after, the main act was introduced, and there she was: Theresa Caputo in the flesh. It was one of those ‘I can’t believe I’m in the same room as her’ moments, after watching all those episodes in person.

My first thought was,’ She’s so little!!’ and then I noticed her trademark high heels, making me realize she was even shorter than her ‘lifted self’ seemed to be.

Caputo transitioned into explaining her unique way of receiving ‘spirit’ symbols, images, and messages. She explained that all of us couldn’t receive a message as there were too many, but spirit would direct her to the souls needing contact the most. And with that, the show began.

She spent a significant portion of the night navigating the floor, working section by section, depending on where ‘spirit’ beckoned to her. She spent anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes per group to relay details and messages from deceased loved ones.

True to form, Caputo delivered her trademark larger-than-life personality, high-energy stage presence, and unmistakable accent as the room shifted quickly from laugh-out-loud moments to heavy, tear-filled breakthroughs for selected audience members.

There were times whenfull-stage video displays helped project Caputo from a distance, with the help of her full media team. This meant we had an up-close view, even when she was far away in the room.

both of us

For believers and longtime fans of her TLC and Lifetime television runs, the show delivered the exact brand of emotional release, humour, and communal healing they expected to witness. Skeptics might have left unconvinced by the broad strokes of large-scale group readings, but for the room at Grey Eagle, it was an undeniable emotional journey.

It was really interesting to watch Geoff’s expression as the show progressed. Unlike myself, he had never watched a show before and he was visually taken back several times as he watched Theresa work the crowds.

I didn’t get a reading, and I could easily recognize that the people who did sure seemed to need that touch more than I did. But the show sure was entertaining; we laughed, and we cried… we witnessed some very emotional stuff.

For someone so small, Theresa Caputo has a mighty presence. And whether you believe she’s guided by ‘spirit’ or simply gifted at reading people, she leaves you with something to think about long after the lights come up.

As for me...

As for me, I’ll be keeping my own messages for Momma tucked away, just in case she finds her way to me in my dreams.
